So i’m trying to move houses and one of the things i realised is how crap my network is and wifi is pretty crap too, so this means i almost didn’t write this piece…so you should all thank me (if anyone is reading this at all that is).
So it’s Halloween, the holiday when ghosts and ghouls and zombies and vampires are celebrated.
I’m not a fan of scary stuff, but that doesn’t mean i don’t dabble and while many might think that anime can’t be scary because of the fact that it’s animated and stuff…guess again.
Below are 3 anime that have either terrified or at least unsettled me.
The Japanese are the masters of horror and one of the reasons they are so good at it is because they have a rich history with enough urban legends and myths to make your hair stand on end.
Mononoke tells the story of the “Medicine Seller” who is a deadly and mysterious master of the occult. He travels across feudal Japan (scariest Japan) in search of malevolent spirits called “mononoke” to slay. On meeting these Mononoke, he can’t just go headlong and kill it but must first learn its Form, its Truth, and its Reason in order to wield the mighty Exorcism Sword and fight against it.
To do this requires intense psychological analysis and careful investigative work—an extremely dangerous step, as he must first confront and learn about the mononoke before he even has the means to defeat it.
So think about that– having to hear the horrifying tale that makes a ghost/malevolent spirit become that way…it’s scary and fascinating at the same time.
A mysterious death, a strange tradition, an eyepatch wearing girl, blood and gore and an air of uncertainty and mystery, what else are you looking for in a horror anime, Another has it all.
It’s a dark tale and the animation is superb as it gives of that unsettling air where all through your time watching it you get that feeling of ‘something’s not right’.
It also has some amazing ‘Final destinationesque deaths to contend with.
Not for the deep thinkers *chuckles*
Not every time guts and gore, sometimes psychological horror
This to me is still one of the most underrated anime of all time and also one of the most realistic, i guess that’s what makes it so unsettling.
The characters are real and relatable and the ‘Monster’ while not having a grotesque physique or apparent supernatural abilities is truly scary because of his ideals and how he works
Johan Liebert scares me more than any Ghoul from Tokyo Ghoul, any Vampire from Hellsing, any monster from Blood C or any Demon from Berserk– Why? Well, he exists.
Like if you look back on killers like Ted Bundy or other charismatic killers, they all had that same power…that hold, it’s unnerving.
Monster starts slowly, but if you have the patience, then it’s a very, very rewarding experience.
That’s it guys, what’s the scariest anime you’ve ever seen? Sound off in the comments below.
