5 Things I Want To See In Marvel’s The Punisher

The Punisher (Frank Castle) is a Marvel Comics character that a number of actors have portrayed on the big screen over the years (Dolph Lundgren- 1989, Thomas Jane-2004 and Ray Stevenson-2008).

After the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character made his return to our screens in the second season of Daredevil released March 2016. This time, Jon Bernthal takes up the role and he’s arguably the best we’ve seen of the character.

In just a few episodes, he gave a performance that made fans all over the world ask for his own stand-alone series. Apparently, the guys at Netflix and Marvel agreed and in a couple of weeks, we finally get what we’ve been asking for.

Therefore, in the spirit of anticipation, here are 5 things I absolutely want to see in the new Punisher series.

  1. BLOOD

Netflix has made it clear to us that they are not afraid to explore the darker, grittier themes that the rest of the MCU tries to avoid. Daredevil was proof of that and although it hasn’t been as pronounced in other title series (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders), they have been consistent with this theme.

I expect The Punisher to push the boundaries of this farther than any of the previous series have (the best being Daredevil Season 2) because let’s face it, this is Frank Castle we’re talking about.

I want Blood.

The re-introduction of Frank Castle to our TV screens definitely means that we are going to learn about his origins. Origin stories are hit-or-miss for me but I understand their importance and I know they are largely unavoidable.

However, I want a balance between the past and the present with The Punisher. I don’t want them focusing too much on his past and neglecting the events of the current timeline, neither do I want them to leave out important details from his origin story.

It’s a tricky balance to find but Marvel was able to pull it off on some level with Dr. Strange so I’m very hopeful they get it right with this.

Everyone familiar with The Punisher knows that not many people can beat him with a gun. He’s usually seen with a number of heavy artillery and somehow he manages to put them all to good use.

Interestingly, that’s not all Frank Castle can be. He’s also an excellent hand-to-hand combatant with extensive military training. One of my favorite scenes from Daredevil’s second season was his fight with Daredevil on a rooftop.

I want to see more of that.

I know this might sound weird to some people.

I know if we were to make a list of funny comic book characters Frank Castle won’t make the top thirty.

Looking closely at humor though, you need to see beyond the uncensored or offensive humor of characters like Deadpool and Rocket Raccoon. I’ve read enough comics of The Punisher to know that he has a dark, weird and sadistic sense of humor.

I personally feel like this will be a key element that will benefit the entire show especially his relationship with other characters.

I know this is a long shot and it’s probably the nerd in me speaking here, but I really want this to lead to other potential shows.

There have been talks about a Marvel Knights (a rag tag team of bad asses) series although nothing concrete has been announced yet. Beyond all the rumors, I really hope The Punisher ties into the MCU smoothly and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for new characters or possible crossovers.

Anyway, that’s it, guys. Do you share my expectations?

Do you have other things in mind?

Feel free to let me know in the comments below.
