So December is almost upon us and that means the end of the year is here. This also means that we would be compiling our ‘best of’ lists.
The first for me is games. I had been too busy to play games for a while, but i’m kinda back on the saddle, this means less time to watch stuff, but hey, something’s gotta give eh.
2017 has served us some really awesome games from some of the indie offerings to the Awesome AAA games. Below are 7 of the awesomest as far as i’m concerned. (oh, and it’s in no particular order)
Horizon Zero Dawn
The first thing that strikes you about this game is the scenery. This is a beautiful game…like really beautiful. The attention to detail is terrifying and how about those humongous robots eh?
Zero Dawn follows Aloy an all round badass who wants to reconnect with society and find out where she’s from. The post-apocalyptic world is extremely immersive as you craft things that will help you survive the wild. Any PS4 owner has got to give this a try.
This popular Japanese RPG is just a joy to play. The stylized graphics gives it a nice, comical feel that makes it a real time gulper. With the help of your friends you deal with typical high school drama while also taking down bad guys and bringing on the pain on evildoers.
What Remains of Edith Finch
There has been a rash of story-based games with deep meanings and all that, take ‘Fire Watch’ and ‘Life Is Strange’ for example. What Remains of Edith Finch is in the same mould but is even deeper. You play as the titular character and you explore the Finch mansion going through stories of your family members all of whom are now dead.
You start each story as a new family member and the story ends with that person’s death. It’s pretty deep and it’s one you definitely don’t want to miss out on.
Super Mario Odyssey
Sigh…i was brought up on Nintendo, so naturally i’ve always had a soft spot for Nintendo’s golden boy and Odyssey was an awesome addition to the series, arguably the best ever.
Mario was one of the pioneers of the Open World system as seen in Mario 64 and Odyssey cranks this up to over 9000 giving you loads and loads of places to explore. Also the reimagination of the franchise which more or less puts Mario in what looks like the real world is an added bonus that excites on so many levels.
It’s one you really have to play.
Resident Evil 7
Good God! This was so good! I started with the Resident Evil series from 2, therefore Leon was my first character and immediately became my favourite. i played 4 and in my opinion that’s the best Resident Evil game ever made. It was a perfect blend of action and the survival horror series. I loved playing that game, coincidentally it was also the first game i ever finished on my own (i know, i was late to the party).
While 5 and 6 were colossal disappointments, 7 breathed new life into the series as it was an awesome offering with the unsettlement factor notched high. The decision to switch to first person was genius and it added to the fear factor. If you don’t play any other game this year, play this one.
I do love me an oddball game and this is as oddball as they get, with graphics that reminds me of Mickey Mouse and the steamboat, this 2D side scroller is one that’s set to become a classic. What more, it’s HARD! You think Dark Souls is frustrating, this one just amps it all up. Along with a great soundtrack and fun visuals, it’s one of those games you’ll find yourself playing for hours and hours. It’s a must play.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This…sigh….this holds a special place in my heart. I love it so much. It doesn’t help that Ocarina of Time is one of my favourite games ever. Breath of the Wild is…Breathtaking. In this beautiful world you play as link and you explore the sprawling vistas of a fantasy world so beautiful it makes you ache.
Breath of the Wild is not only one of the best games this year, it’s also one of the best games ever made.
That’s my list, what’s yours? Did we miss anything out, if so what would you have added. You can leave a comment down below.
