Much ado About Black Clover: Worth All the Hype?

Sigh, so i had to pause watching Rurouni Kenshin (yes, i’m watching it yet again) to give this a look. Last month i listed 6 anime to not miss this Fall and i remember getting one or two people who said “no Black Clover?” and i said no, the ones on the list were of more interest to me.

I later heard some talk about how Black Clover was the new anime that would challenge the ‘Big 3’ (Naruto, Bleach, One piece) and that it would rival the likes of Fairy Tail and HxH conveniently. I started to doubt myself; Was it possible that this Black Clover anime i had more or less ignored (it was on my watchlist, just not very high) was now going to be like the beautiful bride? It didn’t help that i had pretty much ignored Made in Abyss in the summer only for it to be the best anime from the summer lineup.

So i said i’d have another look at Black Clover

I watched a couple of episodes and all i can say is…

Meh.

It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread either. It’s a show that follows the story of Asta and Yuno who were abandoned together at the same church and have been inseparable since.

They both harboured the same dream; which was to become the next Emperor Magus (In One Piece speak; Pirate King). Asta had on teensy problem though.

He couldn’t use magic.

So Yuno received this amazing four-leaf clover Grimoire at age 15, while Asta got nothing. Not for long though as Asta eventually got a Grimoire, only that this one was a five-leaf Clover or a “black clover.

Both are now out in the world with the mind of becoming the Emperor Magus.

What i noticed from the first episode is this: Asta shouts– A LOT! He’s like a typical shounen character, maybe that’s what’s gotten people buzzing. Yuno is also the cool, calm, collected (like Byakuya from Bleach) and that makes his kinda stereotypical too.

I think Black Clover has the legs to be long-running, but will it become a household name? not sure. It’s just 5 episodes in though so you never know, but if Boruto couldn’t do it, what are the odds that Black Clover will be able to?

I will continue watching the show (after Samurai X though) but i’m not so excited and i really feel the hype is unnecessary. As time goes on maybe i’ll be proved wrong.

Till then
